Sport & Leisure Activities in Galloway:

SWIMMING

An indoor swimming pool at the Merrick Leisure Centre is located beside the Douglas Ewart High School on Corsbie Road. This is operated by the Dumfries & Galloway Council as a dual-use resource for the school and community, maintaining a programme for public swimming as well as special times for children and disabled people. Within the Merrick Centre there are also spa pool, sauna and fitness suite.
The Ryan Leisure Centre in Stranraer has a group of leisure pools suitable for all the family, with flumes and a beach area.
There are several beaches within half an hour's drive of Newton Stewart which provide safe swimming in the sea, as well as other water sports.

BOWLING

Newton Stewart has facilities for two different types of Bowling:
There is an outdoor bowling green next to Penninghame St John's Parish Church in Church Street.
In Old Minnigaff, there is a four-rink Indoor Carpet Bowling Centre, where visitors are welcome to bowl or to take advantage of the bar and restaurant facilities.

TENNIS

The Newton Stewart Tennis Club has hard courts in York Road. Visitors are welcome to use the courts and a notice on the gate describes where bookings can be made and where rackets may be hired.

RUNNING

Stranraer Half Marathon Plus Junior Runs in June - with races and fun runs on offer on the day of the event there is something for all the family to run.

CURLING

For curling enthusiasts, and in due season (October to April), a curling rink is located in the North West Castle Hotel in Stranraer. (25 miles from NS)

ICE SKATING & ICE HOCKEY

Dumfries Ice Bowl has an ice rink, bowling and cafeteria. (50 miles from NS)
