Tackroom Cottage. Offers couples an excellent base in quiet secluded Galloway countryside on the edge of the Galloway Forest Park, just 5 miles from Newton Stewart and 25 minutes from Wigtown. Routes for walking, running, cycling or touring by car are all available from the door. The popular footpath up Cairnsmore of Fleet (magnificent viewpoint over the Cree Estuary) is within 100m whilst The Merrick in picturesque Glen Trool is easily accessible in just over 30mins. On a clear night this is an ideal spot to sit in the garden and enjoy Galloway’s Dark Skies.

This location is on the edge of one of only two UNESCO Biospheres in Scotland. The overall density of the population here is only 0.34 persons per hectare and characterised by the large number of small towns, villages and coastal communities.

The cottage is part of a historic courtyard that is over 250 years old and a B listed building by Historic Scotland. It was once part of hunting Estate for the Dukes of Bedford and family home of the Stewarts of Cairnsmore. As the name denotes, the cottage was originally the Tack Room for the Estate Stable Block. Here horses were brought through the over-sized back door to be tacked up before the days work commenced. Today it is as one of two spacious self-catering holiday cottages in the courtyard and offered with the following:

Ground floor: Bedroom: with Edwardian double bed and bedside tables. Dressing room with wardrobe and chest of draws. Lounge/Diner: triple and double sofas, 50” flat screen TV and DVD player, drop-leaf oak barley twist leg dinning table with 4 elm Ercol dining chairs. Kitchen: equipped with dishwasher, fridge, electric cooker, freezer, washing machine and microwave. Bathroom: washbasin, WC, with bath and overhead shower.

Snug: quiet reading room with day bed and a selection of books. NB access via steep stairs.

Garden: separated from the cottage by a farm track and is surrounded by a stane dykes and dominated by two B listed open hay barns, probably the best example of a pair of granite pillared barns in Scotland. Two small lawned areas, one with furniture and BBQ.
